Weekly Course Plan
Week 1 – Meet Scratch
Kids discover what coding is and learn their way around Scratch – stage, sprites, costumes, and simple Motion and Looks blocks.
Project: Dancing Sprite – kids pick a character, make it move and turn, change colors, say a short message, and perform on a fun background with sound.
Week 2 – Making Sprites Move
Kids explore event blocks (“when key pressed”), Motion blocks (change x/y), and simple loops with edge bounce.
Project: Moving Cat – students use the arrow keys to move a cat sprite, keep it on screen, and place it on a custom background.
Week 3 – Adding Interaction
Kids work with sensing blocks (touching color/sprite), simple if / else logic, and sound/speech for feedback.
Project: Cat & Mouse Chase Game – the cat moves with arrow keys, the mouse moves randomly, and when the cat catches the mouse it plays a sound and says “Got you!”.
Week 4 – Variables and Scores
Kids are introduced to variables, create a score variable, and learn how to change it when something happens in the game.
Project: Chase Game Upgrade – each time the cat catches the mouse, the score increases by 1, the score shows on screen, and the game ends when the score reaches 10.
Week 5 – Randomness and Difficulty
Kids use random position/number blocks, simple timing, and adjust difficulty in their games.
Project: Catch the Apple – an apple falls from the top, the player moves a basket left and right, gains 1 point when catching the apple and loses 1 point when missing it.
Week 6 – Levels and Broadcasts
Kids learn how to use broadcast / when I receive, switch backdrops, and connect multiple sprites across levels.
Project: Catch the Apple – Level 2 – after the score reaches 5, apples fall faster, the background changes, and a new sound plays.
Week 7 – Design, Sound & Debugging
Kids add sound and music, draw or edit their own sprites and costumes, and fix simple errors (“debugging”) while planning their final project idea.
Project: Game Makeover – students customize their games with new backgrounds, designs, and sounds, then test each other’s projects in pairs and share feedback.
Week 8 – Final Project & Showcase
Kids complete a Fruit Catcher game using core concepts learned (motion, events, loops, if/else, variables, randomness).
Project: Fruit Catcher Game – the player moves a basket with arrow keys, catches falling fruit for points, and the game ends after too many misses.
Presentation & Celebration: Each student briefly presents their game and one favorite feature. Every child has a complete mini-game to show family and friends.
