Bulgarian Centers in Chicago - pieces of Bulgaria across the ocean
For some - a well-known fact, for others - a surprise: more than 8,000 kilometers from Bulgaria, in the very heart of Chicago, an active Bulgarian life is boiling. The city is home to one of the largest Bulgarian communities in America and today there are several cultural centers. Each has its own character and focus - from schools and dance groups to theatre productions and large-scale festivals. With a variety of initiatives and events, they bring their own energy to the cultural rhythm of the city.
Bulgarica
If you search in Google for “Bulgarian centers in Chicago”, you will see Bulgarica Cultural Center among the first results. And not by chance. Started as a small group of enthusiasts after an autumn fair in 2014, today the organization is among the main hubs of Bulgarian culture in Chicago.

Dancing for young and old
Folk dancing for all ages in Chicago? Yes, there is - and you'll hardly find a richer program than that of Bulgarians Abroad. Professional choreographers lead seven groups by age and level, from beginner to advanced. In addition to folk dances, the program includes modern ballet for children and salsa for adults. The Children's Dance Academy and the Bulgarica Dance Company bring together the best dancers to represent the Center on stages in Chicago, other American cities and abroad.
Chicago Folk Festival
In 2022, Bulgarica, together with its partners, launched the Chicago Folk Festival - a large-scale annual festival that brings together ensembles and performers from different countries. The festival showcases traditional dance and music to a wide international audience, turning Chicago into a meeting ground for world folklore.
Celebrations and parties
Among the most favourite events are the "Bulgaroteca" and the ladies' celebrations - evenings with Bulgarian music, dancing and guest performers. The atmosphere is like "home" - with lots of laughter, support and friendship.
Sunday school for children (grades 1-4)
The newest initiative of Bulgarica, created at the request of Bulgarian parents. The program has been approved by the Bulgarian Ministry of Education and Science and is now in its second year. Children read, write and tell stories in Bulgarian, have lessons in literature, history and geography, participate in holidays, customs, art workshops and games that make our culture close and interactive.
