A journey through colours, time and space

Chicago has long ceased to be just a name on the map for the large Bulgarian community abroad. Over the past decades, the city has become the unofficial “second capital” of Bulgaria—a place where the spirit of the nation finds new and unexpected forms of expression.

In this vast metropolis, among towering skyscrapers and along the shores of Lake Michigan, an art is born that is both nostalgic and bold, traditional and avant-garde. Bulgarian artists in Chicago do not merely paint—they build bridges.

Bagrena Gallery - the home of imagination

To get an idea of the scale of Bulgarian fine art in Chicago, we have to start from its heart - Bulgarica Cultural Centre. Located in the dynamic area of Mount Prospect, it is a haven for anyone who carries Bulgaria within them.

In 2021, at a time of global challenges, the centre is born Bagrena Gallery. Its name is not accidental - it combines the saturation of colours, light and the spirit of Bulgarian art. The founding of the gallery is a response to a long overdue need: Bulgarian artists in the USA to have their own professional stage to share their visions with local and international audiences.

The Role of Bulgarian Artists Abroad

The history of the gallery is inseparably linked to the organization Bulgarian Artists Abroad. Founded in 2007 by cultural figures such as Prof. Vassilen Vasevski, the organization has become the backbone of the Bulgarian art scene in America. For nearly two decades, it has worked to increase the visibility and recognition of Bulgarian art across the ocean, bringing together artists scattered across the country into a unified creative community.

Chronicle of success: iconic exhibitions at Bagrena Gallery

Over the years, the gallery has become a stage for events that have left a deep mark on Chicago’s cultural life. Each exhibition here is a meeting of worldviews, a search for identity, and a triumph of talent. Among them are:

„FIFTEEN - A Retrospective of a Shared Destiny (2022)

In 2022, the FIFTEEN exhibition marks the 15th anniversary of Bulgarian Artists Abroad. It is not just a selection of paintings, but a retrospective of efforts to establish Bulgarian talent on the continent. It brings together veterans and young talents who over the years have built the image of Bulgarian art abroad. Among the names of the exposition are: Professor. Vasilen Vasevski, whose works often explore the metaphysical, Evgenia Petrova with her fine eye for detail, Ralitsa Vladimirova, Tatiana Avdjieva, Stanimira Radulova, Antonia Gurkowska et al.

„A Never-Ending Tale“ (2024)

In early 2024, the Bagrena Gallery presents the iconic group exhibition „A Never-Ending Tale“ and establishes the gallery's enduring presence on Chicago's cultural calendar. The exhibition reveals a wide range of artists, from masters of classical oil to experimenters with diverse techniques. The exhibit demonstrates that Bulgarian art abroad is a never-ending journey that invariably returns to its roots.

„Bright Horizons“, Lucien Dimitrov - Liko (2024)

In October 2024 Bagrena Gallery presents the solo exhibition „Bright Horizons“ by Lucien Dimitrov - Liko. Liko lives in Chicago, but in his paintings American dynamics meet Bulgarian spirituality. His landscapes in acrylic seek timelessness and contemplation in the hectic everyday life of the metropolis.

Onnik and Nina Karanfilyan's exhibition "Together / US Project 2" brought together the Bulgarian community in Chicago

„Together / US Project 2“ (2025)

In the spring of 2025, Chicago welcomed Onik Karanfilian and Nina Koleva-Karanfilian. This was not merely an exhibition but a cultural bridge between Sofia and Chicago. Winners of numerous international awards, they brought with them European refinement and philosophical depth. Their works initiated a new type of dialogue between the Bulgarian art scene at home and creators in the diaspora.

„Summer Wind" and the Magic of Four (2025)

On June 8, 2025 the gallery closes the season with the exhibition „Summer Wind“. She meets four authors with distinctly different handwriting:

  • Yordan Ivanov: He seeks new spaces for the imagination through his unconventional style.
  • Lucien Dimitrov: It captures the light and emotion in the landscape.
  • Kiril Manasiev: He works with a flair for abstraction and richness of textures.
  • Prof. Vasilen Vasevski: He brings his characteristic philosophical outlook to the exposition.

Together they create a visual space in which the different searches are complemented into a whole.

„AlterEgo“ - A view from the inside (2025)

At the end of 2025 the project „AlterEgo“ draws attention to the inner worlds and the identity of the artist. How do you change when you live in a foreign culture? What is your other self? The exhibition is extremely successful. It shows Bulgarian artists in Chicago as contemporary artists who fit perfectly into the international context.

Bulgarian art on other Chicago stages

In addition to the Bagrena Gallery, Bulgarian artists in Chicago also find a stage in American cultural institutions, colleges and independent galleries. These appearances broaden the presence of Bulgarian art and introduce it to a wider public context. Here are some examples:

„Language of Roses“, Harold Washington College

The exhibition „Language of Roses“ by Harold Washington College in 2012 was one of the first large-scale events in the city center, which presented a wide range of artists - Lyubo Velikov, Konstantin Costa, Radiana Hristova This context provides Bulgarian artists with a new visibility and a natural place in the art life of Chicago.

„Heart and Soul“, Magura Bulgarian Center

The Magura Cultural Center in Arlington Heights is also an important stage for our artists in Chicago. In 2023, the Heart and Soul exhibition, organized by Lachezara Delcheva, brings together 13 artists with a total of 35 works. The focus is on traditional forms - icons and wood carvings - that recall the deep connection between Bulgarian art and spirituality. Authors such as Ivan Mihov and Kamelia Tomanova demonstrate that the old crafts are still alive today.

„Here And There: Between Two Shores“, Mission Gallery

In August 2023, on the occasion of 120 years of diplomatic relations between Bulgaria and the United States, Mission Gallery presents the exhibition „Here And There: Between Two Shores“. Curated by prof. The exhibition brings together Bulgarian artists living and working in the United States and focuses on personal experiences „between two worlds“ translated into visual language.

Today and Beyond

Today, in early 2026, Bulgarian art scene in Chicago has a clear history and presence. It has developed in dialogue with the city, with international audiences, and has taken its place on the cultural map of Chicago.

Thanks to the efforts of Bulgarian Cultural Centres and the active work of Bulgarian Artists Abroad, Bulgarian artists have a sustainable platform for expression and exchange. Exhibitions in Bagrena Gallery, together with the presentations of other cultural scenes, outline a professional environment in which Bulgarian art stands out with its identity.

New editions of festivals, new solo exhibitions and even bolder projects will continue to tell the Bulgarian tale in the City of Winds. A tale that, as we have learned, has no end.
